A one-vehicle crash that injured a North Vernon man shut down U.S. 50 east of the Jackson-Jennings County line for almost three hours, police said.
The accident occurred about 5:45 p.m. Tuesday in front of Biehle Electric, two miles east of U.S. 31 in Seymour.
Martin Johnson, 49, of North Vernon began to lose control of his car when the front right tire left the pavement, said Jennings County Deputy Sheriff Maj. Jerry Shepherd. Johnson told investigators he overcorrected, which caused his Monte Carlo to leave the north side of the highway, strike a ditch and hit several trees, Shepherd said.
The specialized equipment necessary to remove Johnson from the wreckage was large enough that authorities had to shut down both lanes of U.S. 50 during the rescue effort.
Johnson, who did not suffer significant injuries, was taken by ambulance to St. Vincent Jennings Hospital in North Vernon for a routine check, Shepherd said.
