A Hope man was arrested on one felony charge of burglary and one misdemeanor charge of battery after police responded to a call from a Walesboro woman who said a man burglarized her neighbor’s house, police said.
Jacob B. Kessler, 21, 731 Vine Drive, Hope, was arrested Sunday night. He’s being held in the Bartholomew County Jail in lieu of $78,500 bond.
The incident was reported shortly after 7 p.m. Sunday at a residence near the intersection of Riley Street and South Jonesville Road in Walesboro, according to a police report.
After deputies arrived, the woman said a burglar had grabbed and thrown her as she confronted him while he was fleeing the home, said Bartholomew County Deputy Sheriff Maj. Todd Noblitt. The uninjured woman also said she witnessed the suspect damage his white BMW when the car struck a concrete block during his getaway, according to police.
A description of the BMW was heard by Detective Kevin Abner on his police radio. Abner realized he had just passed a car matching the description of the suspect’s vehicle on County Road 250 East, southeast of Columbus, Noblitt said.
Abner began searching for the car, which he finally located on Patterson Road in Jewell Village, Noblitt said. He said damage to Kessler’s car was consistent with what the Walesboro woman had witnessed.
Bartholomew County Prosecutor Bill Nash will decide what, if any, charges will be filed.
