Hospital named to Top 100 list

Columbus Regional Hospital has received the 2014 Great Community Hospital designation from a publication that provides business and legal information to the health care industry.

It is the second time in the past three years Columbus Regional has been selected for the recognition from Becker’s Hospital Review.

Jim Bickel, Columbus Regional Health president and CEO, said being named to the list validates the health system’s efforts and solidifies its mission.

“We strive to provide excellent care each and every day and to be there for our community not only for those acute-care needs that arise in times of illness and emergency, but as a partner in health and wellness for life,” Bickel said.

The 100 hospitals were chosen based on rankings and awards from organizations such as the American Hospital Association and iVantage Health Analytics that evaluate and analyze hospital practices.

Organizations cannot pay for inclusion in the list.

Columbus Regional received the designation in 2012, the first year the list was expanded from 65 to 100 hospitals, but was not included last year.

Among the criteria are inclusion in the top tier of iVantage’s Hospital Strength Index rankings and its Top 100 Critical Access Hospital list. That designation indicates whether the hospital performs as well as or better than the full census of all U.S. general acute-care hospitals in clinical and operational performance and financial and qualitative outcomes.

The hospitals selected have fewer than 550 beds and have minimal teaching programs. While some are located in suburban areas, many are found in rural areas and serve as the only hospitals in their communities.

In its designation, Becker’s Hospital Review identified Columbus Regional as a 225-bed hospital that is the flagship facility of Columbus Regional Health and serves 10 counties in southeast Indiana. It also pointed to the facility’s designation as the No. 7-ranked hospital in Indiana, according to U.S. News & World Report.

Columbus Regional was one of four Indiana hospitals included in the list. Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes, Margaret Mary Health in Batesville and Parkview Huntington Hospital near Fort Wayne also received the designation.
