Sunlight peeked through the trees Wednesday morning at Ceraland Park’s campground as the Owens and Bingham families prepared for a water balloon fight outside their neighboring campers.

With squeals of delight, the kids let their watery weapons fly, splashing each other and their parents.

“How is it that I’m the only one who’s getting wet?” joked Valerie Bingham, who took a water balloon in the back from one of the children.

Evann Owens, 9, of North Vernon, said summertime games — the wetter the better — are what the Fourth of July is all about.

Carlie Bingham, 7, also of North Vernon, said this week has been so hot that she has spent most of her time swimming at Ceraland’s outdoor pool.

Both kids said they were looking forward to the night’s fireworks show.

Jim Kreutzjans, general manager at Ceraland, said the park always does “a little bit more” for its Fourth of July celebration, which is open to the public for a fee.

This year, Ceraland added an obstacle course of inflatable water activities and a “Best of Columbus” food court filled with stands from local restaurants, he said.

Kreutzjans said his favorite part of the holiday is watching everyone enjoy the park — especially when the fireworks show begins and families start to cheer.

“That makes it all worth it,” he said.

Columbus resident Tania Works said she and her family, including 3- and 4-year-old children, planned to enjoy most of their holiday at the pool.

“We’ll probably have a hard time getting them to leave (the water),” Works said.
