Road repairs to the State Road 46 and Interstate 65 interchange will resume today after being delayed by storms last weekend.
Beginning at 7 p.m., the exit ramp for northbound traffic leaving I-65 onto Jonathan Moore Pike will close until noon Monday, Indiana Department of Transportation spokesman Harry Maginity said.
Also, the northbound I-65 right lane will be closed from one mile south of State Road 46 to two miles north of the interchange.
The speed limit in the open lane will be reduced from 70 to 45 miles per hour in the work zone, Maginity said.
INDOT officials are warning motorists that there will be travel delays and are asking that travelers consider taking U.S. 31 as an alternate route from Scottsburg south of Columbus to Taylorsville.
Changeable message signs will be used to warn northbound I-65 motorists that they won’t be able to use the exit at State Road 46, INDOT said.
Last weekend’s bad weather could delay completion of the $1.4 million concrete and asphalt restoration project between Carr Hill Road and County Road 100N until mid-September, Maginity said.
The road project near State Road 46 consists of concrete restoration work, patching holes and cracks and installing new steel rods to repair faulty joints, Maginity said.
Different restrictions will be in place every weekend at the State Road 46 and I-65 interchange through at least Labor Day as the work continues, Maginity said.
Crews are working around the clock as part of an accelerated road program intended to lower traffic disruption on weekdays, according to the department.
By working weekends, the length of an average construction project can be shortened by six to eight weeks.
INDOT also announced that delays for I-65 northbound traffic between Seymour and Scottsburg could occur this weekend as work continues on a separate $54.7 million road repair project, Maginity said.
Some delays could be expected there and on U.S. 31 nearby if motorists use that as an alternative, according to INDOT.
Avoid the hassle
To avoid traffic delays on Interstate 65 between Scottsburg and Taylorsville this weekend, state highway officials recommend using U.S. 31.
Delays near the State Road 46 interchange in Columbus are expected as northbound traffic will be limited to one lane, and the speed limit will be reduced to 45 mph.
