Investigation underway after rental home fire

Follow The Republic:

The cause of a fire that broke out late Monday morning in southwest Bartholomew County remains under investigation.

The ranch-style rental home at 10060 W. Spray Road had been vacant for a year-and-a-half, said Southwest Fire Department spokesman Wayne Freeman.

The 10:54 a.m. fire northeast of Waymansville began in a former master bathroom that had recently been converted into a bedroom, Freeman said.

While the flames were confined to one room, smoke damage was reported throughout the home, Freeman said.

The fire was reported by a friend of two brothers — Jeff and Andy Gregg — who had recently purchased the house as an investment, Freeman said.

A dollar estimate on the damage was unavailable Monday afternoon.

Southwest volunteers were assisted at the scene by firefighters from Wayne, Harrison and Columbus townships.
