HANOVER — The Jennings County boys cross-country team placed second in the Southwestern (Hanover) Sectional with 70 points to advance to Saturday’s Brown County Regional. Madison took first with 58.
Jonah Woods finished first individually with a time of 16 minutes, 47 seconds. The rough and rainy conditions prevented Woods from putting on a great performance.
“The conditions were hard today,” Woods said. “You’re running up and down the hills the whole race, and there was one spot on the course where you had to slow down to prevent from slipping.”
Jennings coach Jonathan Meyer was pleased with the overall effort.
“We performed well,” Meyer said. “Going in, we knew we were one of three teams that had a shot at winning this because we have beaten (Madison) earlier in the season, and they beat us before during several meets this season.”
“Taking second in the sectional meet is not bad at all,” he said.
Among other runners for the Panthers boys team, Kyle Lewis placed fifth in 17:20. Ricky Hendricx came in 13th in 18:08. Jacky Koenig took in 21st in 18:47, Wayne Komsi finished 32nd in 19:26, Mitch Deyerling placed 44th in 20:22 and T.J. Mills placed 52nd in 21:08.
The Jennings girls finished sixth place as a team, but had four runners advance to regional as individuals. One of those girls is Rachel Thomas, who finished 16th in 22:44.
Girls coach Leah Brock was pleased with Thomas’ performance despite the conditions.
“She did really well,” Brock said. “She stepped through it all and was a fighter completely and never gave up.”
For the other three girls that qualified, Olivia Heaton finished 21st in 23:42, Jessie Bryant took 27th in 24:15, and Idalit Perez placed 35th in 25:11. Autumn Thomas was 41st in 27:26.
