All southern Indiana residents are invited to Saturday’s sixth annual Jennings County Halloween Festival.
“It’s a free night of fun for our families and friends,” said Judy Ross, Jennings County Tourism Board president. “It’s for anyone from anywhere. The more the merrier.”
The activities will begin with a parade at 4 p.m. in front of the police station near Main and Madison streets in downtown North Vernon. The parade will move to the city park, where there will be music, vendors, food and contests with prizes.
“There will be several costume contests and just a lot of good family fun,” said Candice Cartwright, a volunteer festival organizer. “We want to encourage parents to come with their children.”
There are no fees to be in the parade or to get into the party.
Except for a tattoo contest, there are no fees to participate in any of the contests. The only costs for the night will be at the vendor booths.
“We already have several booths registered for the party at the park,” Cartwright said.
“In addition to some free candy, there will also be vendors of food, jewelry, woodworking, clothing and lots more.”
There will be several categories in the costume contests, with prizes awarded for best costume in each category. Ross said she heard there will be a realistic headless horseman in the parade.
“We always have some really interesting costumes in the parade and in the contests at the party,” she said. “People have really gotten into the costumes in the past.”
There is a $5 fee to enter the tattoo contest. Only tattoos previously applied on bodies will be judged. Free future tattoos will be awarded to the winners of the contest.
Anyone interested in having a float in the parade or a booth at the party should call Cartwright at 812-592-4704 by Wednesday.
Anyone participating in the parade should be at the parking lot near the police station by 3 p.m. Saturday.
