NORTH VERNON — Madeline Brown traveled to Louisville, Ky., to compete March 9 in the annual Kentucky Derby Festival Spelling Bee.
Madeline qualified to compete after she won the Jennings County spelling bee. Her winning word was “amendment.”
“I like to spell. I first read (words) them to myself (and then) my mom and brother quiz me on them,” she said.
Madeline is a straight-A student in sixth grade at North Vernon Elementary School. She plays on the school’s basketball team.
“She is a good student, but more importantly she is a good kid,” North Vernon Elementary School Principal Todd Hearne said.
