VERNON — A drop in property tax revenue is forcing Jennings County officials to cut up to $820,000 from this year’s budget just to meet state approval.
The Indiana Department of Local Government Finance recently rejected Jennings’ proposed budget, tasking county officials with whittling it down to $6.4 million, roughly a 20 percent reduction from 2011’s $7.7 million budget.
The primary cause of the shortfall is lower property tax revenue due to the economic downturn.
