Thank you, Cummins Inc., for once again taking the lead in support of equal rights for all. Your decades-long public stances for human rights and equality and your efforts for diversity are worldwide examples of corporate responsibility. Your participation in the Freedom Coalition to fight the proposed constitutional ban on gay marriage in Indiana is just another in your long history of stances against bigotry and separation.
I well remember similar “controversial” actions your company took in the 1960s in support of African-American civil rights and the freedom marches in the South. Many residents of Bartholomew County — maybe a majority — opposed those actions and decried your involvement. Yet, you moved forward with resolute conviction to support what very, very few residents would oppose today.
Equal rights and acceptance of others of all races, ethnicity, gender and sexual orientation make good economic sense for your company, for Columbus, for Indiana and for the country. On another plane, equality under the law is just the right thing to do.
