April is Child Abuse Prevention Month.

The pinwheel is our national symbol of prevention. It was chosen because it represents the happy, carefree childhood we want for every child.

Bartholomew County Child Abuse Prevention (CAP) program will be having a pinwheel garden at City Hall from April 9 through 16 to represent our commitment to creating a healthy community for our kids.

Child abuse and neglect are a serious problem with solutions that deserve the community’s attention.

As a community we can work together to prevent abuse and neglect to our most vulnerable population before they happen. Children are the future of this community, state, nation and world. It’s essential to make sure that every child has an equal opportunity for a healthy development and stable, nurturing interactions with caring adults.

There are thousands of things — large and small — people can do to make a difference in a child’s life, and we encourage you to join efforts in the prevention of child abuse.

Protecting kids is not solely the job of those we call on after a child has been hurt. There is much more we can do to prevent abuse and neglect. It is a collective responsibility.

Family Service Inc. is dedicated to providing services in prevention of child abuse and neglect. CAP is a program to bring awareness, education and solutions to our community through presentations, training and Kids on the Block.

Caring Parents program provides education as well as providing The Period of Purple Crying education to each mother who has given birth at Columbus Regional Hospital. Healthy Families of Bartholomew County is a home visiting program providing support and education to parents with children up to 3 years of age to prevent child abuse and neglect. Family Service Inc. has reached more than 10,000 individuals through our efforts in prevention in our community.

There are wonderful opportunities to unite as a community and recognize Child Abuse Prevention Month. At 7 p.m. April 16 our local and state officials are coming together to celebrate prevention at City Hall. Or you can join the fun at Family Service CAP Adult Prom from 7 to 11 p.m.

April 20 at Factory 12 Event Loft to help fund our efforts to prevent child abuse and neglect in our community and surrounding areas. Caring Parents Run/Walk will take place at Southside Elementary School beginning at 8:30 a.m. April 13. Please visit our website for program and event information at
