The Obama administration once again showed their arrogant and grotesque sense of “we will tell you what is best for you.” It’s the latest example of the administration’s abuse of power and elitist mindset; another executive action with no regard for the citizen’s views or opinions (or facts and statistics, for that matter).
The executive action signed late this past month puts into effect a ban on re-importation of military surplus firearms into the United States for sale to private citizens. This action blocks hundreds of thousands of American-made rifles from coming back into the country and ending up in law-abiding citizen’s hands. A statement from the White House gives the reasoning: “This new policy will help keep military grade firearms off our streets.” The only problem with that reasoning is that these firearms are virtually never used in gun crimes, let alone “on the streets.” There is no legitimate reason for this ban; these firearms are being purchased by responsible marksmen and collectors, not reckless thugs and drug dealers.
The main firearm affected is the M1 Garand, often referred to as “the gun that won World
War II.” This rifle was a standard service rifle from 1937 through 1957; it is a major part of American history and a prized possession for any collector. These rifles are very outdated and bulky, weighing in at 9.5 pounds with an overall length of 43.5 inches and containing only an eight-round internal magazine. This is why these guns are not used “on the streets” it’s hard to slip a nearly four-foot-long rifle in your waistband and meet up with the gang. The fact that it only contains an eight-round internal magazine is the reason criminals don’t use them in mass shootings.
With the weight, length and magazine capacity it’s hard to refer to them as military grade any longer (in fact, all of the firearms banned by this order are over 50 years old). Compare the M1 to the current M4: 6.36 pounds, a length of 33 inches, a removable 30 round magazine, and a firing rate around 900 rounds higher per minute. If the administration wants to use that logic, then flintlock muskets are still military grade also, the M1s are the “bayonets and horses” the president himself once referred to.
There is no reason for this executive order; it is an arrogant abuse of power. An attack on our Second Amendment rights is imminent, and we must act to protect them. We must draw a line and stop this infringement now, or we give this administration free rein to ignore the Constitution and limit our rights as American citizens. I urge you to sign the petition at www.whitehouse.gov/petition to retract the executive order, visit www.facebook.com/stopthesurplusban for more information, and write your representative. Visit the website www.house.gov/representatives/find to find the name of your congressman and how to contact them.
Let the Obama administration know that we will not sit idly by and let our rights and freedoms be stripped away.
