As a young man working as a freelancer and without steady income, I spent most of my adult life without health insurance. My only plan was to cross my fingers and hope I never got seriously ill or injured. When I finally did apply for coverage, I was told that an individual policy would cost almost as much as my monthly rent.
The Affordable Care Act has completely changed that. It took me all of 20 minutes to apply to the Healthcare Marketplace through the national help line (800-318-2596), and I now have a solid private policy for a fraction of the cost under the old system. I know that if I do need emergency treatment, I will not be facing bankruptcy and the hospital will not have to worry about not being paid.
I want my fellow Columbus residents to know that there are trained local volunteers (health care navigators) here in town to help guide folks through the process and get them covered before the March 31 deadline. People can call in to the local help line at 800-669-1521 to set up an appointment any day of the week.
Let’s put aside the political wrangling and make sure Hoosier families get coverage and lead healthier and more secure lives.
