Indiana has a long and proud history of electing qualified, intellectually honest, honorable men to Congress. After all, we elected Lee Hamilton and the honorable Richard Lugar. Both are admired as political statesmen, as well as honorable, intelligent and fair-minded men. Contrast them with the present candidate for the senate, Richard Mourdock.
Would you expect Mr. Lugar or Mr. Hamilton to embarrass themselves and the state of Indiana using such vile, disgusting language as used recently by Mr. Mourdock? His much-publicized response to a question about his position on abortion for rape victims embarrassed not only him, but the state of Indiana he purports to represent.
For those who have followed the campaign, his remarks should come as no surprise. He spent most of the last six months trying to explain the outrageous remarks attributable to him on Social Security, Medicare and working with the opposition party. What will he be apologizing for when he is Washington? What will he be getting done when he opposes working with the opposition?
Hoosiers, we can do better. I understand if you are a Lugar Republican you find yourself with no candidate to support. I urge you to give Joe Donnelly a second look. If you find yourself unable to back either candidate, perhaps backing neither is a reasonable alternative?
Don’t reward this utterly intolerable behavior with a $174,000-a-year job in Washington. Let’s elect someone we can be proud of, not someone who shames himself and the state of Indiana.
