I am responding to the letter to the editor from Robert DeWitt titled “Inclusiveness Surveys Truly Inclusive?” I am a member of the S.A.F.E Community Initiative that is conducting interviews with the LGBTQ community and their allies, and public and private businesses and organizations with whom they interact. We are open to interviewing anyone who falls within these groups.
Our purpose is to determine if the LGBTQ community still feels concerns (as expressed in the 2004 and 2011 Heritage Fund surveys) over how welcoming Columbus is to them and to find solutions if the problem still persists.
It is not the purpose of our group to “enact procedures and laws” as Mr. DeWitt fears. What programs we propose as a result of this process, if any, will be entirely voluntary on the part of the businesses and organizations within our community.
