This past Friday St. Bartholomew Parish bade farewell to two members of our church family, Joe Wesolowski and his daughter, Michelle. The grief felt by surviving daughter, Katie, and her badly injured mother, Barbie, still in the hospital in Indianapolis, was shared by all who know and love them.
The response to the grief, however, was uplifting and not without a quiet joy. That is explained for many of us by our belief that death ends life as we have known it, but that life as God’s gift continues, and in a better place.
With visitation set for Friday afternoon from 1 p.m. till the Mass of Christian Burial at 4 p.m., I asked if we might possibly use North Christian Church’s parking lot for overflow.
I was informed that our neighbors at North Christian had already made the space available. In light of the off-site parking, we contacted CPD with a request for an officer to assist in making the crossing of Home Avenue at Tipton Lane safe for the mourners. Teams of
volunteers were formed to assure order in the parking lot, welcome in the church and water for all. An offer of water and volunteers from Red Cross was much appreciated, but the need had already been anticipated and covered within the church.
Columbus Police Department far exceeded all my expectations with its deployment of officers, not only to Tipton Lane, but to the intersection of 27th and Home.
Where I had imagined a likely gridlock of mourners, school buses and harried parents vying for space and mobility with walkers and cyclists, there was order and calm, smiles and waves of appreciation. Our CPD officers were prompt, efficient and most helpful to all who were under way to and from Northside, CNHS, Schmitt Elementary and St. B that day, but in my view they were truly a “God-send.”
My thanks to all of you whose generous gifts of time, energy and prayer helped to make our funeral for Joe and Michelle an occasion of true grace and goodness in the midst of sadness and loss.
