HOPE — Two men riding motorcycles south of Hope suffered head and other injuries during a wreck Wednesday afternoon that also involved two vans, police said.
The men, whose names were not available Wednesday night pending notification of family members, were flown by LifeLine helicopter to an Indianapolis hospital, Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Capt. John Martoccia said.
Shortly before 4 p.m., a Chevrolet Venture driven by Heidi Sites, 37, of Flat Rock, was traveling north on State Road 9. Another van, driven by 16-year-old Lincoln Jasper of Hope, was southbound on the same road. The two bikers, both riding Harley-Davidson motorcycles, were trailing Jasper, Martoccia said.
Jasper turned left onto County Road 500N directly in front of Sites’ van, Martoccia said.
When Sites swerved into the left lane to avoid a collision with Jasper’s vehicle, she didn’t see the two bikers and struck them. Her van then went off the west side of the highway and smashed into a utility pole, Martoccia said.
Neither motorcyclist was wearing a helmet, Martoccia said. Besides significant head trauma, both bikers also suffered leg and chest injuries, Martoccia added.
Sites was taken to Columbus Regional Hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening, Martoccia said.
Jasper was not hurt, and his vehicle was not damaged, Martocia said.
Both lanes of State Road 9, between County Roads 450N and 550N, were closed for almost three hours while emergency responders attended to the situation and cleared debris from the road, Martoccia said.
