Signature Academy students to walk to school
Students from the Columbus Signature Academy Fodrea and Lincoln campuses and from the Parkside, Richards, Schmitt, Smith and Taylorsville elementary schools will participate today in International Walk to School Day.
Students will walk or ride their bicycles to school with their parents, teachers, community leaders and Columbus Mayor Kristen Brown, starting at various meeting points around the school district.
In 2011, the annual event was celebrated at more than 4,000 events at schools across the United States, along with children and adults in 40 countries around the world, according to the Bartholomew Consolidated School Corp.
The event includes creating awareness for safer routes for walking and bicycling and emphasizing the importance of physical activity, pedestrian safety, concern for the environment and building connections between families, schools and the community.
The local effort is being organized by the Safe Routes to School Committee.
