Fire forces cross-country banquet evacuation

A smoldering fire discovered Wednesday night at Columbus North High School led to the precautionary evacuation of about 200 people who were there for a cross-country banquet.

Assistant Principal John Green said second-shift custodians contacted him at about 9 p.m. when they smelled something burning and were unable to determine what it was. Green called 911, and Columbus firefighters arrived.

The source was traced to an insulation-wrapped pipe in a crawl space, where a laborer earlier that day had been using a welding torch that firefighters believe sparked the smoldering fire.

Green said the banquet was for about 80 cross-country runners and their families. He said the evacuation broke up proceedings a little early but did not have a substantial effect.
