Gas leak causes county road closure near Hope

HOPE — A gas leak prompted officials to temporarily close State Road 9 between county roads 500N and 600N Thursday afternoon.

The leak near Leonard’s Tire Shop was reported at 2:08 p.m. Hope Police Department spokesman Joe Lange said two buildings adjacent to the business were evacuated as a precaution.

Lange said the leak occurred in a gas line that was either serviced or replaced two months ago. He said that while the recent snow and cold weather may have prompted the line to break, the cause of the leak has not been determined.

Repair crews were called to the scene, and the road was expected to reopen by

Thursday evening.

Daniels names Columbus man to safety commission

Gov. Mitch Daniels recently named a Columbus resident to the Integrated Public Safety Commission.

Jason Carroll serves as director of public safety at Ivy Tech Community College.

It was one of Daniels’ many end-of-term appointments to boards and commissions.

He also reappointed:

  • Suzie Rentschler, of Hartsville, to the Indiana Arts Commission.
  • William Schulz, of Brownstown, to the Manufactured Home Installer Licensing Board.
  • Todd Richardson, of Columbus, to the nonprofit Indiana Secondary Market for Higher Education Funds.

Navistar move boosts Cummins truck engines

Cummins rival Navistar International Corp. has begun shipping heavy-duty trucks equipped with a Cummins engine.

Cummins, meanwhile, continues to hold a significant market share lead in the heavy-duty truck engine market.

Navistar conceded last summer that it could not meet federal emissions standards and would obtain emissions technology from Cummins Emission Solutions and, beginning in January, would offer its heavy-duty trucks with Cummins engines.

Reaching its ready-to-ship date five days ahead of schedule “demonstrates the tremendous progress we’re making,” Navistar President and Chief Operating Officer Troy Clarke said in a news release.

“Working collaboratively and fully integrated with our Cummins colleagues, the team has beat an aggressive launch timeline while ensuring the highest levels of quality.”
