The Columbus East and Columbus North high school marching bands performed at a high level in separate competitions Saturday.
Columbus East’s Olympian Spirit Marching Band achieved a gold rating in the Indiana State School Music Association Scholastic Class Marching Band contest at Plainfield High School, East band director David Rodgers said. That earned the band a berth in the Oct. 26 Scholastic Marching Band Finals at Lawrence High School in Indianapolis.
Judges also recognized East for outstanding music and general effect.
“I’m very proud of what they accomplished,” Rodgers said about his band. “We still need to focus in the next couple of weeks on visuals, so we can bring it to a higher level.”
Columbus North’s Sound of North Marching Band finished third of nine bands in an invitational at Center Grove High School, Greenwood, North band director Bill Stultz said.
He said the competition was not a qualifier for future competitions. However, he said it was a great opportunity for judges’ feedback as the band prepares for the ISSMA regional contest Saturday, again at Center Grove.
Stultz said he was pleased with the finish. He said the band still needs to work on the pacing of its show and add some new elements to make it more interesting for the audience.
