A Columbus man was arrested in connection with the theft of stealing wire from The Cole apartments construction site near the parking garage between Second and Third streets.

Jeremiah Walton, 26, was arrested early Saturday after police found him hiding behind bushes just south of Second Street with wire in a cart that was attached to a bicycle.

A passerby called 911 at 1:55 a.m. Saturday and reported that a man had run from the building with possibly stolen materials.

Columbus Police Detective Chris Couch, who was off duty at the time but in the area, found Walton hiding behind the bushes, said Sgt. Matt Harris, a spokesman of the Police Department.

The wire found in the bicycle cart matched wire at the construction site, Harris said. Harris had no information on the amount or type of wire taken.

Walton was booked into Bartholomew County Jail on a preliminary charge of theft, a Class D felony.
