Columbus Parks and Recreation Board members approved Mayor Kristen Brown's nomination to promote a veteran from within as the new parks director.

Monday, board members unanimously hired Mark Jones to lead the parks department.

Jones, director of parks sports programs and athletic facilities, has been with the department for 18 years.

He said being named the new parks director is a goal he's had for some time.

"I've always wanted to run my own parks department," he said. "I didn't think it would be quite like this, with all of the political stuff going on over the last several months or so, but it's something I want to do. I have passion for the place."
