Mayor Kristen Brown will join Gov. Mike Pence and hundreds of other motorcyclists in Mill Race Park this morning, just three weeks before leading her own motorcycle ride.
Today’s Ride with the Governor will start in Indianapolis and wind south along scenic roadways to Bartholomew County.
It will stop in Columbus at Mill Race Park for about an hour around 11:30 a.m. before continuing on through Seymour and ending in Madison, along the Ohio River.
Brown will join the ride when it leaves Mill Race Park, hopping on her Ducati Monster 800 to make the rest of the trip to the river.
In three weeks, she’ll lead the Mayor’s Ride, winding through a 100-mile loop to Rushville and back.
The mayor’s motorcycle ride is Aug. 16. It is sanctioned and organized by the local chapter of American Bikers Aimed Toward Education, or ABATE, and is in its third year.
Brown said she hopes for a response similar to last year, when about 200 motorcycles — many with passengers — turned out to support the ride and the Columbus Firemen’s Cheer Fund, a local nonprofit run by Columbus firefighters and community members.
Solo riders pay $20 and riders with passengers pay $30 to participate in the mayor’s ride, with all proceeds benefiting the Cheer Fund, which provides gifts for more than 1,000 local children during the Christmas season.
The ride is an opportunity to have a great day while supporting a great cause, Brown said.
Brown, who started riding dirt bikes as a 15-year-old and still rides often within the city limits both alone and with other motorcyclists, said the ride is a lot of fun.
She said it’s her favorite event of the whole year.
And it’s safe, she said. The city and ABATE receive assistance from Indiana State Police troopers, who give the route the green light and go ahead of the bikers to make sure they get through intersections safely during the ride.
After completing the loop, mayor’s ride participants return to entertainment, including a band and food provided by Columbus firefighters.
