Bartholomew County Commissioners approved a $36,755 bid to replace the roof on the covered bridge in Mill Race Park in Columbus.
CJ Construction and Restoration of Columbus was the low bidder to replace the cedar shake roof on the 173-year-old bridge over Driftwood River.
Because of the construction materials, Danny Hollander, the county engineer, said he wasn’t sure what prices to expect when he sought bids for the project.
There was about a $30,000 difference between CJ Construction’s low bid and the highest bidder, Hollander said.
Although the bridge is in a city park, the county is responsible for bridge repairs countywide. Hollander said the builders will coordinate with the parks department to make sure the work on the roof does not conflict with scheduled park activities, but he expected the work to be done by early November at the latest.
The state provides a special fund for covered bridge repair, and that account has $22,950 in it, Hollander said.
