Columbus, Ind. — A Columbus man was killed instantly when his mo-ped was struck by a car near the VFW post on National Road, south of the Clifty Creek bridge.
Timothy Cross, 53, died from multiple traumas to the body, according to Bartholomew County Deputy Coroner Larry Fisher.
A preliminary investigation indicates Cross was southbound at 10:42 p.m. Friday on U.S. 31 at the intersection of Base Road, when his mo-ped was rear-ended by a small passenger car, driven by Shannon Franklin, 42, also of Columbus.
"At this point, our investigation does not lead us to believe that speed, alcohol or drugs were involved," said Chief Deputy Todd Noblitt of the Bartholomew County Sheriff's Department.
Sgt. Kris Weisner is attempting to reconstruct the accident in an effort to determine why the fatal crash took place.
Noblitt said the road conditions were dry at the time.
"We know it was dark and that the mo-ped was probably traveling at a slower speed," said Noblitt. "But there's nothing about this accident that sticks out as being bizarre or reckless. While we're still trying to figure out what happened, I don't know if we will ever be able to."
The sheriff's department was assisted at the scene by the Columbus Police Department, the Columbus Township Fire Department and Columbus Regional Hospital personnel.
