Nearly ready for road

Columbus-based Cummins Inc. and Eaton have announced a more efficient heavy-duty engine that will be available this fall and save truck owners about $3,000 per year in fuel costs, Cummins said.

Cummins already has a leading share of 40 percent in the North American heavy-duty truck market, and spokesman Jon Mills said the company expects the new powertrain package — which includes the transmission, engine and software — to be well received.

The powertrain package will save drivers between 3 percent and 6 percent of fuel compared to the existing model, Mills said.

For a typical truck driver, a 4 percent fuel savings translates into annual savings of about $3,000, he said.

Also, the companies said the new powertrain package, which includes an Eaton Advantage Series automated transmission and a 15-liter Cummins ISX engine, will save truckers money through lower preventive maintenance costs.

The project also is an extension of the decades-long cooperation between Eaton, based in Cleveland, Ohio, and Cummins, Mills said.

The companies said they improved the existing powertrain package by upgrading the components and software, which, for example, optimized engine and transmission communication.

The companies also said that Eaton’s new transmission eliminated the use of a cooler, which, coupled with greater use of aluminum, reduced weight by 75 pounds and improved reliability.

The package also includes a patented electronic feature from Cummins that allows for better management of acceleration and smoother shifting.

Tim Sinden, president of Eaton’s North American Truck Operations, said in a news release, “The level of integration between this transmission and engine is best in class in the North American heavy-duty truck market.”
