Given the choice of spending the winter in Florida or Maine, most people would probably choose the warmer climate of Florida.
Elliott Welmer chose Maine.
The recent Columbus North graduate, who has committed to play basketball at Saint Louis University beginning in 2015, had his prep school choices narrowed to Bridgton (Maine) Academy and Montverde (Florida) Academy. His choice wasn’t a difficult one.
“(Bridgton) was a better fit overall for me academically and athletically,” Welmer said. “I thought I could grow more in Maine than I would in Florida since it was a better fit for me. There’s going to be no distractions.”
The 6-foot-9 forward averaged 15.6 points,
7.8 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.4 blocks a game in helping lead the Bull Dogs to a 20-6 record as a senior. He was an All-Conference Indiana selection and a high honorable-mention All-State pick by The Associated Press.
“(Saint Louis) gave me three or four prep schools, and I kind of narrowed it down from there,” Welmer said. “They didn’t say, ‘Pick this one.’ They let me decide.”
Welmer leaves for Bridgton a week from today.
“I’m going to have to get a pair of snow boots and a big jacket,” he said.
