A 10-year-old Edinburgh boy has died after being hit by a car Friday evening.
Ethan Powell died at Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University Health in Indianapolis, Edinburgh Police Chief David Mann said.
Powell was the son of Jason Powell, a Franklin firefighter, and Erin Powell, of Edinburgh. He was a fourth-grade student at East Side Elementary School.
The boy was hit by a car after crossing the road in front of his home to check the mail. When walking back to his home, he waited for cars to pass, then didn’t look east when he started across the road, Mann said. He did not see a westbound van driven by Ray Chaney, 81, of Indianapolis, Mann said.
The incident happened just after 3 p.m. on State Road 252 near Lind Drive. Chaney was driving to a family reunion at a campground in Edinburgh.
Police investigators were at the accident scene Friday night and Saturday morning, taking measurements and reconstructing the accident, Mann said.
As is the case in any serious accident, blood samples were taken from Chaney, but investigators have no reason to believe drugs or alcohol were involved, he said.
“It just appears as if there was no time to react,” Mann said.
Mann does not expect any charges to be filed. The speed limit on the road was 40 mph, and there wasn’t evidence Chaney was speeding or that his view was blocked in any way, he said.
The Franklin Fire Department sent an ambulance to intercept the Edinburgh ambulance and offer paramedic help.
“We knew it was one of our guy’s kids,” Franklin Fire Department spokesman Chuck Ridpath said.
A helicopter then flew the child to Riley, where he died that night.
“It definitely cuts deep for everybody when something like this happens,” Ridpath said. “We live with each other. We work 24 hours at a time. Every third day, you live with each other, so you know about each other’s family.”
