TWO years ago, Columbus East quarterback Gunner Kiel received his Indiana Mr. Football Award when the Olympians hosted Columbus North in boys basketball.
Friday night, when East hosts the Bull Dogs again in boys basketball, the Class 4A state champion Olympians football team will be recognized. So will East’s final four volleyball team and elite eight girls soccer team, both of which won regional titles.
“With a lot of people in town, it’s a great time,” East athletics director and football coach Bob Gaddis said. “It will be a nice tribute to all of those athletes.”
Meanwhile, the Bull Dogs have a little something special planned when the East and North girls basketball teams meet tonight at North. The Indy Air Bears jump rope team will perform at halftime.
Presale tickets for the girls game are on sale through this afternoon and for the boys game $5 through Friday in both schools’ athletics offices.
East will keep $1 from each presale ticket it sells for the girls game at North, and North will keep $1 from each presale ticket it sells for the boys game at East.
Athletes named all-state
Junior running back Markell Jones, who led East to the Class 4A state title, has been named to the Indiana Football Coaches Association Top 50 All-State Football Team.
East quarterback Alex Cowan, wide receiver JT Voelker and offensive lineman Evan Kuhn are on the Senior 4A All-State squad. Offensive lineman Devorus Lewis is on the Junior 4A All-State team.
North offensive lineman Tyson Clark made the Senior 6A All-State team. Offensive lineman Ezra Followell and defensive back
Josh Holt are on the Junior 6A All-State squad.
North to host regional
If the North girls basketball team plays top-ranked and defending state champion Bedford North Lawrence in the regional again this year, it will be on the Bull Dogs’ home court.
The IHSAA has announced host sites for sectional, regional and semistate rounds, and the biggest change for local schools comes with the change in the girls regional location. North has played BNL in the regional on the Stars’ home floor the past two years, winning in the 2012 final and falling in the semifinals in 2013.
The North and East girls will play the sectional this year at Bloomington South. BNL and Richmond will be host semistate sites, and the state finals are at the Hulman Center in Terre Haute.
This year’s boys sectional will be at Shelbyville. The regional remains at Seymour, and Seymour and Richmond remain host semistate sites. The state finals are at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
Seymour will also host a Class 4A boys sectional. Edinburgh and South Decatur will host Class A boys sectionals.
Makeup dates announced
Several boys and girls basketball games which were snowed out the past two weeks have been rescheduled.
The Jennings County boys game with Madison will be Jan. 14 and at South Ripley will be Feb. 1. The Panther girls will host East Central on Jan. 7 and Seymour on Jan. 13.
The Brown County girls will host Sullivan on Jan. 2. The Trinity Lutheran girls will visit Medora on Jan. 16, with a 6 p.m. varsity-only start time.
Elkhart star earns honor
Elkhart Central senior Azariah Stahl has been named the Gatorade Indiana Volleyball Player of the Year.
Stall, a 5-foot-11 outside hitter, totaled 804 kills, 40 blocks, 317 digs and 31 aces in leading the Blazers to a 30-4 record and a Class 4A state semifinal berth. The Purdue recruit is a two-time All-State selection and a member of the 2012 USA Women’s Junior National Team.
