NORTH VERNON — A North Vernon woman was seriously injured in a two-vehicle crash this afternoon in Jennings County.

Chris A. Callahan, 57, of North Vernon had to be extricated from her vehicle by North Vernon firefighters and was airlifted to University Hospital in Louisville with serious injuries.

According to Indiana State Police Trooper Matt Holley, shortly after 3 p.m. a 2008 Chevrolet pickup truck driven by Matthew D. Jayne, 30, of North Vernon was northbound on State Road 7 in North Vernon.  A 1990 Ford Ranger pickup truck driven by Callahan was also northbound behind Jayne's truck.

Just north of the State Road 7 and State Road 3 split, the Ranger attempted to pass the Chevrolet on the shoulder and ran out of roadway.  The two vehicles made contact and the Ranger began to skid sideways, struck the embankment, and then came to rest on its top in the southbound lane of Indiana 7.

A passenger in the Ranger, Donovan Booker, 16, of North Vernon suffered only minor scrapes. Jayne was uninjured.

The crash remains under investigation.

Holley was assisted by North Vernon Police Department and North Vernon Fire Department.
