Overturned semi-trailer causing traffic congestion in North Vernon

Follow The Republic:

NORTH VERNON —  Motorists are being asked to avoid one of the main intersections in North Vernon after a semi-trailer overturned this afternoon.

The 3:48 p.m. accident took place at the intersection of State and Walnut streets in downtown North Vernon. It's the area where State Roads 3 and 7 have a junction with U.S. 50.

Jennings County 911 Director Matt Alexander said there were no reports of any injuries, and that the overturned semi was not a tanker. He said he was unaware of any environmental hazard.

However, Alexander said the accident has brought traffic to a crawl at State and Walnut streets as emergency crews work to remove wreckage and clean up the site. Motorists are urged to use alternative routes.

Alexander said he could not predict when the debris is expected to be cleared and normal traffic patters will resume.
