Parents arrested after 6-year-old found in locked car at Kohl's

Follow The Republic:

A Columbus father and mother were arrested on charges of Class D felony neglect of a dependent, accused of leaving their 6-year-old son in a locked car at Kohl's at about 6:30 p.m. Saturday.

Shabbir H. Fanee, 43, and Fizza Fanee, 40, Columbus, are accused of leaving the boy in a Volkswagen Jetta in the Kohl's parking lot at 711 Creekview Drive, with the motor running and the air conditioning on.

When Columbus police arrived, they found the vehicle and the boy began to cry violently, said Officer John Searle. The boy's hair was wet with perspiration, police said.

Officers attempted to calm the boy and asked him several times to unlock the door. When the child complied, officers discovered that the air conditioner was actually blowing warm air out of the venting system, police said.
