Pence plans political decision by end of January

COLUMBUS, Ind. — U.S. Rep. Mike Pence, R-Ind., said today that he hopes to make a decision on his political future by late January.

Pence is in Columbus holding several meetings with constituents including a Rotary Club luncheon and a talk at Harrison College.

After the Rotary meeting, Pence told The Republic that he planned to make an announcement on his future by the end of the month. Pence has been rumored to be considering a run for Indiana governor or president.

Pence, a Columbus native, easily won re-election to Congress in November but stepped down from his leadership role in the Republican caucus.

At the Rotary meeting, Pence talked about the weekend shooting in Arizona that injured Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz. He stressed that people can't become afraid of their freedoms in the wake of a tragedy like this.

He plans to listen to any police concerns, but to continue to hold town-hall forums and other public events.
