A Brown County man arrested for pointing a handgun at another driver also is facing drug charges, police said.
Police in Columbus received a cellphone call at 6:32 p.m. Friday from a man who had just driven from Franklin to his western Bartholomew County home.
The caller said a heavy-built man in a light blue, four-door Chevrolet pickup had just pointed a firearm at him on southbound Interstate 65 before exiting at the State Road 46 interchange and heading west, Columbus Police Department spokesman Lt. Matt Myers said.
Officers found a westbound truck driven by Darrick J. Day, 36, of 3896 Liberty Lane, Nashville, matching the caller’s description on State Road 46 near Country Club Road and made a traffic stop to investigate, Myers said.
Once the investigating officer saw Day had a handgun next to him, the officer pulled the Nashville man away from the pickup, Myers said. A search of the truck turned up both marijuana and a pipe used for smoking the drug, Myers said.
After a probable-cause arrest was made, Day admitted to investigators that there was an angry exchange between himself and another driver on I-65, and he pointed the weapon at the other man, Myers said.
Day was arrested on charges of intimidation with a deadly weapon, a Class D felony; possession of marijuana, a Class A misdemeanor; and possession of paraphernalia, a Class A misdemeanor.
No one was injured during the incident, and the other driver did not pose any immediate threat to Day, Myers said.
“Whenever you pull a handgun, it escalates things quickly, and somebody could be hurt,” Myers said.
Day was booked into the Bartholomew County Jail at 8:13 p.m. Friday and later released on a $25,000 surety bond.
Formal charges against Day, if any, will be determined by the office of Bartholomew County Prosecutor Bill Nash.
