Jennings County authorities say they are fortunate their pursuit of an Elizabethtown man carrying a tank of anhydrous ammonia in his car didn’t end with an evacuation and public health threat when the suspect’s vehicle crashed in Geneva Township.
About noon Friday, Jennings County Sheriff’s deputies attempted to take Daniel J. Grider, 44, of 9381 E. County Road 475S, into custody on a Bartholomew County warrant for probation violation by trying to pull over his vehicle near an intersection north of Queensville, said Maj. Jerry Shepherd of the Jennings County Sheriff’s Department.
Grider fled north at a high rate of speed along County Road 350W, eventually moving onto other rural roads in Geneva Township, Shepherd said.
The pursuit lasted a little over a mile before Grider crashed his vehicle near an iron bridge along County Road 275W and was quickly taken into custody after Grider unsuccessfully tried to escape on foot, Shepherd said.
“We did not know that tank was in the trunk until after the pursuit ended with the arrest,” Shepherd said. “Had the tank ruptured as a result of the crash, it would have caused a serious threat to everyone involved near the vehicle.”
Anhydrous ammonia, a farm fertilizer chemical, also is used to make methamphetamine.
Police also discovered paraphernalia in Grider’s vehicle associated with the manufacturing of methamphetamine, Shepherd said.
Grider was arrested on charges of illegal possession of anhydrous ammonia and resisting law enforcement, both Class D felonies.
After being treated for minor crash-related injuries, Grider was booked into the Jennings County Jail at 2:53 p.m. Friday, where he’s being held without bond.
Formal charges in connection with Friday’s incident, if any, will be determined by the office of Jennings County Prosecutor Alan Marshall.
