A Jennings County teen died during the weekend after she jumped from a moving van north of Seymour on Saturday afternoon.
Laikyn Field, 17, of rural North Vernon died Saturday at IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, Jackson County Sheriff Mike Carothers said.
Field leaped from a 2008 Dodge Caravan traveling 30 mph in the 6000 block of East 700 North, also known as Enos Road, Detective Bob Lucas with the sheriff’s department said.
It appears Field was injured when she struck the pavement after jumping from the van, Carothers said. There are no trees along the road in that area of Enos Road, he added.
Police are unsure what prompted Field to jump from the van. That remains under investigation, Carothers said.
Jason Bowerly, Field’s stepfather, was driving east on Enos Road along with Kandle Bowerly, her mother, and Field when the girl “became upset and leaped from the rear passenger’s side of the vehicle,” Lucas said.
The incident, reported at 4 p.m. Saturday, occurred about a quarter-mile east of State Road 11 on the southern edge of the Rockford Heights housing addition.
Field was taken to Schneck Medical Center in Seymour for treatment in the emergency room and was then flown to Methodist Hospital because of what were described as severe head injuries, Lucas said.
The cause of death was not available Sunday afternoon, Lucas said. He was awaiting information from the Marion County Coroner’s Office.
Indiana State Police accident reconstructionists are assisting in the investigation.
Others assisting at the scene were Reserve Officer Rick Hirtzel, Officer Darin Downs and Officer Jeff Waters of the sheriff’s department and Trooper Matt Holly of the state police.
Jackson County Ambulance Service, Redding Township Volunteer Fire Department and Seymour Fire Department also assisted at the scene.
