Columbus Police Department has hired a new officer, Ryan K. Hines.

The Indianapolis native earned a criminal justice degree from Ball State University. He was a member of the Reserve Officer Training Corps during college and serves as a 1st lieutenant in the Indiana Army National Guard, according to a city news release.

Hines, 24, was sworn in by Mayor Kristen Brown on Feb. 11.

Hines will attend the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy for 15 weeks, beginning March 31. After basic training, he will be required to complete a 14-week field training program with Columbus Police Department.

He is expected to begin working by himself by November.
