Police investigate shooting that wounded 3-year-old

Follow The Republic:

Police are investigating what happened when a 3-year-old boy was shot in the stomach at a Brown County home Sunday night.

A woman called 911 at 5:51 p.m. and asked for an ambulance to come to the home at 6319 Spearsville Road for the child who had been shot in the stomach. The child was taken by medical helicopter to Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University Health.

The injury was not fatal, but police did not know the boy’s condition Monday, according to an Indiana State Police news release.

Police neither released the name of the child nor few details about what happened.

The boy was in a relative’s home when the shooting occurred, according to the news release.

Police said the investigation was in the early stages, the release said.

Brown County Sheriff Rick Followell said he asked the state police to investigate the shooting because a 911 dispatcher on duty at the time of the shooting is related to the owner of the home where the shooting occurred. He said he wanted to avoid any potential conflict of interest issues.

No one has been arrested.

If someone is arrested, Brown County Prosecutor Jim Oliver would decide what, if any, charges would be filed.

“At this point, we don’t know enough really about what happened to make that decision one way or the other, or even evaluate whether or not it’s a possible charge,” Oliver said.
