When Halloween activities begin Wednesday, the Columbus Police Department wants to make sure families stay safe.

“We’re just basically wanting parents to monitor their kids and be involved,” said Lt. Matt Myers, spokesman for the Columbus Police Department. “We don’t foresee any issues coming up. But we’ll have officers out there; and if something does happen, we’ll deal with it.”

The police department offers the following safety tips:

  • Older children should go trick-or-treating with friends.
  • Make sure children wear reflective clothing and never approach vehicles.
  • Approach only well-lit homes.
  • Make sure children are able to see and to breathe properly when using masks.
  • Parents should walk with their children to doors and become familiar with each home they visit.
  • Children should stay in well-lit areas and avoid shortcuts.
  • Children should stay alert for suspicious activity.
  • Teach children to yell loudly if anyone tries to grab them.
  • Consider alternative trick-or-treating (attending parties at home, schools or community centers).
