Police rescue 2-year-old found in parked car at mall

Follow The Republic:

Columbus Police rescued a 2-year-old boy from a car in the FairOaks Mall parking lot Thursday after the child’s father was found passed out and slumped over the wheel.

Temperatures had reached the low 90s at about 2 p.m. when police found James Elgar, 27, Elizabethtown slumped over the wheel of a Nissan, Lt. Matt Myers, Columbus Police spokesman said.

When police arrived, the front driver's side door was open, Myers said. Someone passing by had called police for a welfare check on Elgar, he added.

After trying to rouse Elgar, officers saw the child in the back seat and called for medical help.

Police do not know how long the two had been in the car in the hot temperatures.

The child was hot and sweaty but is recovering, Myers said. Child Protective Services was notified about the incident.

Elgar is being held in the Bartholomew County Jail on charges of Class D felony child neglect, and Class A misdemeanor charges of possession of marijuana and possession of paraphernalia.
