Police say weekend burglaries targeting businesses connected

Burglars made off with guns and money after breaking into and ransacking several businesses in the same section of Columbus over the weekend.

City police now are stressing the importance of installing burglar alarms and video surveillance equipment and making sure that the equipment works properly once it is in place.

“The harder you make it for a burglar, the less likely he is to get in,” police department spokesman Lt. Matt Myers said.

Police think all seven burglaries were related because of the similarity of the forced entries — generally, the doors were pried open — and the fact that the businesses were ransacked. All were reported between 4 p.m. Saturday and 6 p.m. Sunday

Myers said:

  • The burglars made off with guns and knives from a building at 3365 Commerce Drive. They pried open safes and stole money from Jody’s Gymnastics Zone, 3880 Long Road, and Shelby Materials, 5165 N. Indianapolis Road.
  • Burglars kicked in a door at Burnside’s American Flags, 5150 N. Indianapolis Road, but apparently did not steal anything.
  • Burglars tried to break into NAPA Auto Parts, 3665 N. National Road, but were unable to get inside, Myers said.

No information was available about burglaries at 4510 and 4520 Progress Drive.
