Public defender dies at 38

Follow The Republic:

A public defender in the Bartholomew County court system died after a medical emergency Saturday at a Columbus gym.

Daniel Schuetz, 38, an attorney at Eggers Woods Attorneys at Law in Franklin, was exercising between 11 and 11:15 a.m. at 812 Cross Fit, 1750 25th St., when he collapsed, according to Bartholomew County Coroner Larry Fisher.

Other people exercising at the gym and staff members tried to resuscitate Schuetz before the ambulance arrived and took him to the Columbus Regional Hospital emergency room, Fisher said.

Fisher said Schuetz was pronounced dead at 12:30 p.m.

“He was really athletic,” said Fisher, who did not know what exercise Schuetz was doing when he collapsed.

Fisher said he expects to learn the cause of death after an autopsy this morning.

Schuetz grew up in Franklin and was a 2006 graduate of the IU School of Law in Indianapolis.

Bartholomew Circuit Court Judge Stephen Heimann said Schuetz had been a public defender for the county for six to eight years.

“Daniel was an outstanding attorney in that he understood justice and he strove to ensure that just results occurred in his cases,” Heimann said.

The judge also said Schuetz was a “delightful” person who “exuded joy and enthusiasm for life and his work.”
