Race Across America cyclist injured in accident

Follow The Republic:

A female "Race Across America" bicyclist passing through Bartholomew County was taken to Columbus Regional Hospital following an accident on Columbus' west side this morning.

However, the woman from Switzerland was alert and walking following the 5:40 a.m. mishap near Morgan Willow Trace and West Jonathan Moore Pike, Columbus Police Officer John Velten said.

The accident happened when a semi struck the back of a "Race  Across America" chase vehicle which was travelilng directly behind the bicyclist, said Velten, who was at the scene of the mishap.

The impact pushed the chase vehicle forward, causing it to strike the bicyclist, Velten said.

The woman, who has not been identified, appeared to only sustain scrapes and bruises during the accident, the patrolman added.
