Johnny Nugent, the Republican state senator from Lawrenceburg who represented portions of Bartholomew, Jennings and Jackson counties, announced Monday that he will not seek re-election and will retire.
Nugent, a former majority floor leader of the Senate Majority Caucus, was first elected to the state Senate in 1978. He represents Senate District 43.
Nugent served as chairman of the Senate Agriculture and Small Business Committee for more than 20 years. He also served as chairman of the Roads and Transportation Committee and was ranking member of the Insurance and Financial Institutions Committee, according to a news release from Nugent’s office.
He authored legislation to exempt taxes on heating fuel for Hoosiers and to require that disciplinary action taken against doctors be reported to the Medical Licensing Board, the news release said.
