Road near Waymansville set for repairs; timetable uncertain

Follow The Republic:

A road in southwest Bartholomew County will have to be closed for up to three months for the $445,000 replacement of a bridge.

However, it’s not clear at this time when County Road 725W, located north of Waymansville, will be off-limits to traffic.

“The bridge is narrow, old and in poor condition,” Bartholomew County Highway Department engineer Danny Hollander said. “We wanted to get this done a couple of months ago, but the property owners wanted us to hold off until they got their crops out.”

However, Hollander said the contract was awarded so late in the year that there’s no way that crews from Force Construction could replace the bridge, located just east of Lutheran Lake, and pave it before winter.

“So we gave the contractors some flexibility to put this project in with their other work, in order to get it open again,” Hollander said.

The contract will allow Road 725W to be closed for no longer than 90 days. But the highway engineer said those days don’t necessarily have to be consecutive.

“They can work on it whenever they want during the winter, and pave it in the spring,” Hollander said. “Then, they can open it back up and let people drive on gravel until the asphalt plants opens in April.”

Hollander said the contractor also has the option to begin the project in February and work straight through until new pavement can be put down in the spring.

Force Construction was awarded the contract by the Bartholomew County Commissioners during their Sept 24 meeting.
