Safety training for grain bins planned

COLUMBUS, Ind. — Free grain bin safety training sessions will begin at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. July 30 at Richards Elevator’s new facility, 1442 West Road 550N.

The first session, from 9 a.m. to noon is for FFA groups, local farmers and the general public. A second session, from 1 to 5 p.m., is for fire departments and grain elevator operators.

A free lunch from noon to 1 p.m. is planned for all in attendance.

Sponsored by Richards Elevator, GSI and local dealer Schafstall Inc., the training aims to teach attendees about how to prevent grain bin accidents and fatalities.

Agriculture experts are predicting an increased number of grain bin accidents and deaths this year because last summer’s unusually wet weather led to greater levels of crop mold, which create dangerous crusts in storage bins.
