Briefly describe your daily/weekly workout routine.

On Monday, Wednesday and Friday, I do kickboxing; and Tuesday and Thursday I do resistance training with bands. Kickboxing consists of a warmup of 15-20 minutes: shadow kicks/punches and stretching, followed by a heavy bag routine. Resistance training is either upper body or lower body, and we train one muscle group at a time.

What inspired you to begin a regular fitness routine?

I wanted to lose the baby weight and learn a way to live a healthy way and take that home to my family.

Why is it something you have stuck with?

I have been consistently working out at Farrell’s eXtreme Bodyshaping (FXB) since March 2012 because I love it! FXB is different. The workouts are challenging and vary based on instructor, so I never get bored.

How do you make time to work out?

When it is something you love, you make time. I alternate class times based on when I instruct and when my husband and mom can watch my son.

When and why did you get serious about fitness?

I decided to get serious about fitness right after my son turned 1. I hated what I saw when looking in the mirror and felt disgusted by the meals that we ate. So in March 2012, I joined FXB with my mother-in-law, and we have never looked back. I am stronger than I have ever been and have been able to continue working out, even into my ninth month of pregnancy.

Have you lost or gained muscle mass through working out?

People focus on weight loss, but FXB teaches you that weight is not what matters. It is about losing inches and gaining strength. I have lost tons of inches and developed muscle definition like never before.

What’s your favorite exercise?

My favorite exercise is the bag work on kickboxing days. It is high-intensity and a great stress reliever.

Any exercises you dread, but do anyway? Why?

I dread leg day because, let’s face it, it’s very challenging and takes discipline to find a level 10 on band days! You have to push yourself as you only get out of your workout what you put in.

Do you listen to music while you work out? What’s on your playlist?

Yes, we listen to music while working out. On kickboxing days, we work out to mixes chosen by the instructor. On band days, the iPod is just on shuffle, so whatever comes on, but we try to keep it upbeat!

Do you follow a special diet? If so, describe it briefly. Do you “cheat” much?

At FXB, we don’t call it a diet, but a lifestyle change. It consists of six small meals a day to keep hunger away and metabolism high. It’s about eating lean meats and fruits and veggies.

Do you have a favorite fitness moment, for example, when you reached a tough fitness goal or overcame a plateau?

My favorite fitness moment was when I instructed my first kickboxing class. Instructing has given me confidence to speak in front of others and the ability to help others along their fitness journey.

What do you do to motivate yourself when you just don’t want to work out?

I have a partner who depends on my being there and never wanted to let her down. However, since being pregnant, it gets a little harder as the pregnancy goes along. I have had several members tell me they watch me, and they’re able to make it through a tough workout because I have inspired them.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to start working out?

 Just take it one day at a time. You will be sore, and it won’t be easy; but if you just show up every single day and give it all you have, you will see changes in yourself.

What’s a little-known fitness fact about you?

I currently hold the plank record at FXB at 13 minutes.
