Twelve Bartholomew County elementary schools and one from Decatur County will compete in the sixth annual MATH Bowl at 5 p.m. Thursday.
The Math Academic Teams for Hoosiers competition, at Southside Elementary School, 1320 W. County Road 200S, Columbus, is for students in Grades 4 through 6. It will consist of four rounds of seven math questions — most of them multiple choice — that will emphasize geometry, said Annette Driver, the local event coordinator and a fifth-grade teacher at Southside.
Three students from each school will compete in each round, she said. The students will be allowed to confer with one another after each question to come up with an answer.
Other schools across the state will have regional competitions the same day, Driver said.
After the competitions, the Indiana Association of School Principals, the event’s co-sponsor with Purdue University, will compile scores and rank the schools based on performance. The top 10 teams in each enrollment class will receive a plaque or certificate, Driver said.
The competing elementary schools from the Class 1 enrollment group will be Clifty Creek, Taylorsville, Parkside, Richards, Schmitt and Southside from the Bartholomew Consolidated School Corp.; Hope from the Flat Rock-Hawcreek School Corp.; and North Decatur from Decatur County.
The competing elementary schools from the Class 2 enrollment group will be Columbus Signature Academy — Fodrea, Columbus Signature Academy — Lincoln, Smith and Rockcreek from Bartholomew Consolidated; and ABC-Stewart, which is a private school in Bartholomew County.
